Cilkas story began a few years ago when she had an epiphany that her Facebook account had been hacked.
Facebook had not previously shared that information.
After her account was hacked, Cilkos team spent weeks researching the issue.
“I just knew I wanted to be the first person to know what was going on,” she says.
In the end, she says she got what she was looking for.
Cilakis team began contacting Facebook representatives and began talking with people who had been affected by the hack.
They began working with Facebook’s general counsel, Paul Carr, and with Cilaks legal team, and eventually, with Zuckerberg himself.
Ciliaks legal team then started looking into how to protect Cilkas personal information, and how to secure it from misuse.
Facebook and Cilklas team then decided to collaborate on a solution.
“We had a lot of people talking about what we should do,” she recalls.
The solution was simple.
“You can do anything you want on Facebook, but we have to do it right,” says Cilks lawyer, Brian Loeffler.
“And that was our solution.
We have to have this kind of trust and confidence that Facebook has that we are not doing anything wrong.”
Cilkins team had worked with Facebook for many years and knew that its systems were robust.
So they set out to learn how they could better protect Ciliks personal information.
“That was the first time I realized that there was a problem, and I wanted Facebook to fix it,” she said.
“They needed to change their systems so we wouldn’t be hacked again.”
Ciliakis team contacted Facebook’s security team and learned that they had already worked with the FBI on this issue.
So Cilkois team contacted the FBI’s Cyber Crimes Unit, which is tasked with investigating cybercrime.
In a short email, Cils lawyers told Facebook that they needed more information about the issue, and asked for additional help.
“Facebook told us they were working on a plan and we would get back to you within a day or two,” says Loefler.
Within a few weeks, Facebook had responded with more details about the hack and the steps they were taking to ensure that their systems could not be compromised again.
“There was no doubt that Facebook was committed to our privacy and we had a team working on this,” Cilki says.
“When we started the conversation about how we could go forward with this, the response was, ‘Oh, it is going to take a few days.'”
Facebook and its lawyers responded with another email, asking for additional information and more time.
They also promised to provide a new plan.
“It took a lot longer than we thought it would,” says Tod Stokes, Ciliaks lawyer.
“The response from Facebook was so aggressive that they were like, ‘It’s going to be a month or two, it’s going not to work, we have a lot more work to do.'”
Facebook’s lawyers also threatened to stop cooperating with Cilikas team if the team didn’t agree to a deal that would protect the company’s users’ privacy.
Cilicaks team decided to continue working with Cillas team.
They decided to build a new system, and they worked with other organizations to create a system that would be secure for the entire Internet.
“Cilkas team wanted a secure, encrypted system, so we made sure to make sure that every single person that was using our platform, that they would be able to use our encrypted system,” says Stokes.
“So it was a process that was never done before.”
A new solution came in May of this year, and it took nearly two years of development.
“All of the people who were working together on it were so dedicated,” says the Cilkinas team member.
“To make this work we needed a lot.
It took a long time to build.”
In October, Ciliakas team and its legal team presented the new system to Facebook, and the company was all in.
Facebook released a security update in November that made it possible to securely access the information stored on Cilkees Facebook account.
The new system was finally ready for prime time.
“This was the perfect time to do something really important,” says Mark Zuckerberg.
“People should not have to worry about being hacked again.
They should have a secure platform that they can use to do what they do and not worry about it again.”
The first day that people used the new service, it was used by more than 100 million people, and that number increased every day.
“Our mission has always been to help people to be able use Facebook,” Zuckerberg says.
Cilekas team also had to change its entire platform to make it more secure.
