When Journey first began, it was billed as an alternative to the mainstream and became a huge hit in the US.
But things were going downhill from there, with the band falling into a coma and the original producer quitting.
Now, more than three decades later, Journey is back with a new album and, for the first time in its 40-year history, it’s getting a sequel.
The album, Crystal Journey, was released on September 11th and the first single is the haunting “Crystal”.
The album’s lead singer, Mark Sherry, has been speaking out about the difficulties of trying to make a new record while dealing with a number of personal issues.
He told the ABC’s Lateline program that he’s trying to keep a “happy face” while working through these issues.
“I’m not happy with my current situation and I’m trying to stay positive, even though it’s not going to be easy,” he said.
“It’s an enormous task, so we’re just doing it to give ourselves some hope and to have a little bit of an idea that maybe, just maybe, it’ll work out somehow.”
Sherry was diagnosed with lymphoma last year, which had been kept under wraps until this album came out.
“As I was dealing with this issue, the fact that this was something that I was facing was a real shock to me,” he told the program.
“So, I was very, very, excited that Crystal Journey was coming out.”
There’s a lot of stuff that’s been said about me in the media, but I can’t think of any other person that’s ever said that about me.
“And I think the public just really likes it, because they’re so aware of the fact I’m still alive and they’re not quite sure what’s going on.”
Shery said he was struggling to deal with the stress of the diagnosis.
“There’s some things that I’ve never been able to do, that I’m afraid I won’t ever be able to cope with,” he added.
“For me, it is not the time to be feeling angry, depressed or frustrated.
I have always been an optimist and a hope person, so this album was just the opportunity to be an optimiser, to have something positive and to hope for the future.” “
My whole life has been about fighting the battle.
I have always been an optimist and a hope person, so this album was just the opportunity to be an optimiser, to have something positive and to hope for the future.”
Sherys daughter, who was also diagnosed with the disease, is also one of the lead vocalists on Crystal Journey.
Sherry told Lateline that Crystal is the last of the band’s music, and he wants her to sing the final song on the album.
“When I sang the first song of Crystal Journey with my daughter, I didn’t even know that I’d have to sing it,” he recalled.
“But I felt like it was my duty to do so and I really feel that this album is really about me, so I feel like it’s my duty.”
“Crystal Journey” is a title that’s meant to be a bit of a pun on Crystal, a mineral that’s found in the Australian Outback.
“Crystal” is the name of the mineral, and “Journey” is Journey.
The title comes from the fact Journey was the first Australian band to tour the US and Europe in the 1970s.
Crystal Journey is the first album to have all the songs recorded in a single day.
