A lot of cyclists are taking a ‘I am not gonna bother’ route, with some even suggesting they have done it in the past.
In a recent interview with The Sport Magazine, Cycling Australia’s executive director, Steve Litchfield, talked about the need to make cycling more accessible to people who don’t normally cycle.
Litchfield said the Australian Cycling Federation was working on a national strategy for cycling and that the organisation was aware of the need for cyclists to be more visible in society.
“The reality is that we have more people cycling than people walking in Australia, so we need to be talking to people more about the benefits of cycling, so that we can make it more accessible,” he said.
“It’s also a good time to be out and about, so it’s great that we’ve got the national bike network and the big parks, so if we can get that cycling infrastructure going, it’s a good thing.”
The Sport Magazine also asked Litchfeld to share some tips on the best way to cycle around Sydney, and he said the best time to cycle in Sydney is after work, because people are getting up at the same time as they are going to work.
“If you’re working after 7pm, the best place to cycle is around the CBD.
You have to be careful, though, because it’s got to be very quick,” he explained.”
You’ll find a lot of people in the CBD, they’ve got to catch the train, and then they’ll cycle.”
I’m sure they’ll have a couple of days off.
The only thing you can do is look at your bike, make sure you’ve got a good saddle, you’ve been riding it for a long time, you’re well groomed, you don’t get tired and if you get a flat tyre, get it checked out, that’s a sign that you’ve probably got a problem.
“Litchford also recommended that cyclists get off the roads and take a walk on a designated bike path.”
Bicycles are a great alternative to cars, which can get pretty aggressive, and the only way you’re going to avoid getting hit by a car is by walking, because you’re not going to hit anyone,” he told the magazine.”
Most of the time it’s safe, it takes a little bit of planning and a bit of self-discipline, but you’ve still got a bit more than a car on your wheels.
“The Australian Cycling Association’s executive committee is expected to publish a report into the issue in the coming months.
